Although most dogs bark from time to time, excessive barking may be considered a nuisance under City Code SEC 3.02.023. To address the issue, residents may choose to either have a letter sent to the animal's owner or sign a formal complaint and appear in court as a witness to the nuisance.

First Occurrence - Letter

Call the Barking Dog line at 816-325-7213 or fill out an online complaint through the IndepNow App. A letter will be sent to the owner explaining the complaint and recommendations on how to remedy the problem.

Future Complaints

If the barking is not resolved by the letter, you may sign a formal complaint, requiring you and the dog owner to appear in court. Please call ahead to 816-325-7205 to ensure an animal services officer is available to meet you with the required paperwork. You may sign the complaint at the Regional Animal Shelter located at 21001 E. M-78 Hwy. This step can be done at any time, and the first step can be skipped if you wish to file the formal complaint without sending the letter. Please be specific about dates and times the dog was a nuisance to you.
