Palmer Center Activities and Events for AUGUST 2023 

INDEPENDENCE, MO – The Palmer Center at 218A N. Pleasant St. in Independence, MO is operated by the City of Independence and is dedicated to the mission of improving the overall health of adults 60+. Under the Sea – Tuesday, 8/17 from 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM Price: $49

Be transported into the amazing underwater world during a tour of the Sea Life Aquarium, where more than 5,000 sea creatures live. After the aquarium, visit The Hallmark Visitors Center to learn about Hallmark’s rich history and see how greeting cards are made. You will have time at Crown Center for lunch on your own and shopping before returning to Palmer Center. 

 

Movie of the Month – Tuesday, 8/1 at 12:30 PM                                                                                         

Relax after lunch and enjoy a classic movie.

 

Independence Uptown Market Stroll – Wednesdays, 8/2, 8/16, and 8/30 at 9:30 AM                      

We’ll stroll as a group to the Farmer’s Market to shop for fresh produce. We’ll bring a wagon for carrying items back.

 

Covid Vaccination Clinic – Thursday, 8/3 from 9:30 – 11:15 AM

Are you due for a COVID Vaccination? Free vaccinations will be given by the Independence Health Department.

 

Veteran’s Café – Thursday, 8/10 at 10:30 AM

Join other Veterans and family members for coffee, pastries, conversation, and learning about veteran benefits. Co-Sponsored by Good Shepherd Hospice.

 

Project Linus Quilters – Friday, 8/11 from 12:30 - 4 PM

Bring your sewing machine and basic supplies to sew for Project Linus quilts. Pre-cut fabric kits with fun patterns are provided. Great for both beginner and experienced quilters. There is no cost for the quilt kits, backing, or batting. The completed quilts are donated to children in need. Coordinator: Jodie Land

 

Medicaid Caregiver Assessment – Tuesday, 8/15 at 12:15 PM

We are having a Medicaid Specialist coming in to help navigate Caregiving and funds. You or your loved one may be able to receive funds from Medicaid, stop by to find out.

 

Fishing at George Owens Nature Park – Tuesday, 8/15 at 10 AM                                    

Registration Required by 8/8. Fishing rods and supplies will be provided. Space is limited.

 

Karaoke with Cleveland University – Friday, 8/18 at 10 AM

Come have fun singing karaoke with students from Cleveland University. Off key, or no key, we all love karaoke!

 

National Senior’s Day – Monday, 8/21 at 12:15 PM                                                            

We’re celebrating you on National Senior’s Day. Come dressed as you did in high school. Bring a picture of yourself from your high school days and we’ll guess who’s who.

 

Scamboree – Tuesday, 8/22 from 9:30 - 11:30 AM                                                              

Protect yourself with our Scamboree Event at the Palmer Center! We'll have exhibits, activities, speakers, and a panel discussion all about how to protect yourself from scams. This event is FREE for all adults 60+ and adults with disabilities. For more information, call the Palmer Center at 816-325-6200.

Library Gab and Games – Thursday, 8/24 at 12:30 PM                                                                        

Stop by to talk about your favorite books and play some fun word games. On 8/24 we will also have a celebration and award prizes for the Summer Reading Challenge.

 

Music by Rick Marvin – Friday, 8/25 at 10 AM                                                                         

Enjoy live music entertainment performed by Rick Marvin. Co-Sponsored by Archwell Health.

 

September Events with August Deadline:

 

Hannibal, MO: The Adventures of Mark Twain – Wednesday, 9/20 from 8:15 AM - 8 PM Deadline to pre-register : 8/16 Price: $143                                                         

Step back in time during a visit to Hannibal, MO. Enjoy a wonderful lunch buffet, followed by a one-hour riverboat cruise on the Mark Twain Riverboat. After the cruise, visit the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. You’ll have the opportunity to see the Huck Finn House, Becky Thatcher House, J.M. Clemens Justice of the Peace Building, and Grants Drug Store – in addition to the interactive museum.
